This project helps small grocers implement natural, near-zero-emission cooling systems in place of traditional climate-damaging refrigeration systems—the latter of which cause more than 3,448 times more damage to the environment. While the shift to natural systems can be cost-prohibitive, especially for small grocers, it permanently reduces emissions by nearly 99%—with no risk of reversal. The project has thus far allowed two capital-constrained, family-owned supermarkets in New Jersey and Pennsylvania to install CO2 refrigerant rack systems. By implementing this climate-friendly practice, they join large international organizations in the effort to combat climate change.
